Happy 4th!
Sure looks like great weather for the 4th of July weekend..at least so far. Live music, street dances, parades, fireworks, bbq, and parties everywhere! (plus the Twins are playing Detroit this weekend! can anyone say hot dogs, baseball, apple pie, and..well..whatever kind of car you drive.) We here at the Weekly Musician wish all of you a very safe and festive celebration weekend..have all the fun you can stand..but above all..be careful out there! (oh yeah..and if you get a chance..get out and see and support live music..of whatever kind..wherever you want to do it.)

There were a few things going on last
weekend around here..widely separated as they were. Wild Cherry
was partying at the Eagles Club in Grand Rapids, JuJu5 was in Marble,
Atlantis was in Hibbing, and as a surprise, since I didn't find it
listed anywhere, Tommy and Alan Dowling were jamming at the Wilderness
Pub, and sounding great there. I managed to get to the Eagles and
to the Wilderness on Friday, and spent $75 for cab fare (when I drove
cab here that would have been a 45 dollar fare..and that was only a few
years ago)..maybe this is
one of the reasons people aren't going out too much lately. I know
it's one of the big reasons I'm not making three or four places a night
anymore. What with the recent closing of the 4th Street, and
another venue talking about quitting live music, travel is becoming
necessary to see anyone, it seems. With that in mind it's
interesting to note that recently a music bar opened in Duluth with
music 4-5 nights a week, and another is in the process of opening in
Minneapolis. The one in Minneapolis is being opened by a couple of
friends of mine and of the Weekly Musician..folks that helped us with
the Blueberry Jam and the first Summer Jam. One of them was
working on opening the same kind of place here..along with myself and
Mike Webber..when financing and lease problems shut down that
endeavor..so it's nice to hear that the new place is in line for a
'soft' opening the first part of July..food and music on Lake and
Lyndale..if you get to the Cities, stop in and say Hi to Dave and
Mike..and check out the start of their
website
here. If you take a look toward the bottom of the page, you
can see that they have a killer sound system, and, just as important
from a musicians standpoint, a venue designed exactly for this..a
greenroom with an elevator directly to the stage, and a bunch of other
stuff designed just for live music. Sure is nice to see that it
continues somewhere, isn't it?
